Lately, I have felt that the most difficult part of the composition process is rarely to make the music coherent, but rather that the very first part, namely finding the inspiration for the work, is the biggest challenge. To get over this, this time I used an internet service that provides the user with a number of randomly selected words, which gave me the words wave, unlikely and researcher. With this as a first seed, I first chose to change the order of the words and hence get the idea of an unlikely wave researcher and then put myself in such an imaginary researcher's shoes, which was accomplished by letting an algorithm on the website freesound.org – a website that contains a collection of audio files from users who contribute their own recordings and similar for free – provide me with a randomly selected audio file, the waveform of which was the subject of my “research”.

The audio file selected by the service was a nearly three minute long field recording from the stands in a football arena in São José, probably before the football match had had time to begin. The recording includes scattered voices in the form of talking, screaming and shouting in Portuguese as well as someone caterwauling with some sort of wind instrument reminiscent of a French horn. Around the middle of the recording, a maracatu band begins to thunder with all its might. Even though the musicians are quite unsynchronized, they manage to excite the audience and you can hear some scattered cheering and wolf whistling behind the thunderstorm. The “horn player” also gets captivated and begins to plod away with arrhythmic outbursts and incomprehensible tone choices. It all ends with the rattling of the maracatu band fading out, after which a compere through a loudspeaker system is heard echoing in the distance.

Based on this varied material, I have analyzed some of the respective speech contours of the different voices, the melodic patterns of the wind instrument and the (un)rhythmic drum patterns of the maracatu band etc. and then put together the more or less fragmented acoustic components into a coherent whole. The result is thus not a direct imitation of the original sound, but can rather be seen as a musical sound collage of the atmosphere in a football arena.

På senare tid har jag känt att det svåraste momentet med att skriva musik sällan är att få musiken att hänga samman, utan snarare att det allra första momentet, nämligen att hitta inspirationen till verket, utgör den största utmaningen. För att komma över detta använde jag mig denna gång av en internettjänst som förser användaren med ett antal slumpvis utvalda ord, vilken gav mig just orden wave, unlikely och researcher (”våg”, ”osannolik” och ”forskare”). Med detta som ett första frö, valde jag först att byta ordningen på orden och därav få idén om en unlikely wave researcher (ungefär ”forskare inom osannolika vågor”) och sedan sätta mig i en sådan tänkt forskares situation, vilket gick till genom att jag på websidan freesound.org – en websida som innehåller en samling ljudfiler från användare som gratis bidrar med sina egna inspelningar o. dyl. – lät en algoritm förse mig med en slumpvis utvald ljudfil, vars vågform fick bli föremål för min ”forskning”.

Ljudfilen som valdes ut av slumpgeneratorn var en nästan tre minuter lång fältinspelning från publikläktaren i en fotbollsarena i São José, troligen innan fotbollsmatchen hade hunnit börja. I inspelningen hörs bl.a. spridda röster i form av pratande, skrikande och skrålande på portugisiska samt någon som väsnas med ett blåsinstrument som påminner om ett valthorn i klangen. Ungefär i mitten av inspelningen börjar ett maracatuband på nära håll dundra på med allt kraft. Även om musikerna är ganska osynkroniserade eggar de upp publiken och man hör jublande och lite spridda busvisslingar bakom kulsprutsfabriken. ”Hornisten” får också feeling och börjar kämpa på med otajmade utbrott och obegripliga tonval. Det hela avslutas med att maracatubandets skramlande glesas ut varpå en konferencier genom ett högtalarsystem hörs ekande på distans.

Utifrån detta varierade material har jag analyserat några av de olika rösternas respektive satsmelodier, blåsinstrumentets tongångar och maracatubandets (o)rytmiska mönster med mera och sedan satt ihop alla mer eller mindre lösryckta förekommande akustiska komponenter till en sammanhängande helhet. Resultatet är således ingen direkt imitation av originalljudet utan kan snarare liknas vid ett ljudkollage över atmosfären i en fotbollsarena.
